Kids are more natural at home
We believe that the whole point of creating professional family photos is to capture the family as they are. This means all the giggles, noises and expressions that come with having kids in the family.
Very often you will see adults giving instructions or trying to bribe the kids into “just one smile for the photographer and then we’re done!” - which is NOT a productive way to do it.
The best way to capture kids at their best is to put the phones down and play with them! Once you start to gain their trust and confidence you will find that they will open up and give you way more than you asked for.
How to work with shy kids and very young children in a family photography session
When we arrive at a session with young kids involved; whether it be baby photography, young family photos or during our adult and teen family photography sessions; we often find that they are shy and not willing to participate. This is completely normal and expected.
Once we get started, we first establish ‘social-proof’ by chatting to the adults and other participants and being accepted ‘into the clan’. This is very powerful for gaining young children’s trust. The next thing is to take the pressure off them completely by first asking for their participation and then if they refuse, to continue without them. Once they see everybody having fun anyway, they soon want to join in!
