From Outdoor Weddings to Studio-Style Newborn Photography—Here’s What Changed.

For years, I was a natural light photographer. I spent weekends shooting beautiful outdoor weddings, golden-hour maternity sessions, and sun-drenched family portraits. I loved the spontaneity of shooting outside—the movement, the changing light, the challenge of capturing the perfect shot in an unpredictable environment.

But when I started photographing mostly newborns, I realised outdoor photography wasn’t the right fit anymore.

Newborn sessions require an entirely different approach. Unlike weddings, where the chaos is part of the fun, newborn photography demands control, consistency, and a calm, predictable environment. That’s why I made the shift to indoor, in-home photography using professional studio lighting.

Here’s why—and why I believe it’s the best choice for newborn photography.

1. Natural Light Is Beautiful—But It’s Also Unreliable

As a wedding photographer, I became an expert in chasing the light—waiting for clouds to pass, adjusting to harsh midday sun, and using reflectors and modifiers to soften shadows. But with newborns, you don’t have that kind of flexibility.

☀️ Too much light? Overexposed images.
🌧 Too little light? Dark, inconsistent photos.
🌄 Different times of day? Different colour casts.

When shooting indoors, you’re at the mercy of your windows—some homes are flooded with light, while others are dimly lit. And even in bright homes, natural light shifts constantly, meaning your images can vary from one shot to the next.

💡 My solution? Controlled studio lighting in-home. It gives me the perfect, consistent lighting setup every single time—no matter the weather, time of day, or house layout.

2. Babies (and Parents) Are Happier Indoors

I’ll be honest—outdoor newborn sessions are tough. The weather, temperature, and changing conditions can be overwhelming for both babies and parents. Here’s why I prefer indoor sessions:

👶 Newborns don’t have to endure wind, sun, or unpredictable temperatures. Indoors, we can keep the space warm and comfortable—ideal for those peaceful, sleepy newborn poses.

🍼 Parents feel more at ease. There’s no need to pack up and leave the house in the first few weeks postpartum. Everything you need—nappies, feeding supplies, changes of clothes—is right there at home.

🛋 Your home adds a personal touch. Unlike an outdoor setting or traditional studio, an in-home session allows us to incorporate sentimental elements—your baby’s nursery, a favourite blanket, or a quiet moment in the space where you first brought them home.

3. In-Home Photography = Studio-Quality Without the Studio

A common misconception about in-home photography is that it looks like “lifestyle” photography—candid, unposed, and heavily reliant on natural light. That’s not what we do.

We create a studio-quality setup inside your home, using:
Professional lighting (soft, flattering, and perfectly controlled)
Neutral walls to create timeless, elegant images
Expert natural posing techniques designed specifically for newborns

The result? Studio-quality newborn portraits, captured in the comfort of your own home.

Final Thoughts: Why I’ll Never Go Back to Outdoor Newborn Photography

I loved my time as a natural light photographer. But when it comes to newborn photography, I’ve found that in-home sessions with professional lighting provide the best experience for both babies and parents.

Now at Grain & Weave, we bring the studio to you—no need to leave the house, worry about lighting conditions, or deal with unpredictable weather. We create a calm, controlled environment that results in beautiful, timeless newborn portraits every time.

Until next time!
Jo
