What to Wear for Your In-Home Maternity Session (And Why It’s Not About Getting It ‘Right’)

What to Wear for Your In-Home Maternity Session (And Why It’s Not About Getting It ‘Right’)

There’s something beautifully honest about maternity photography at home. You’re not in a studio with spotlights and wind machines—you’re in the space where your baby’s story begins. The same room where you’ll pace with them at 3am, the lounge where you’ll learn to swaddle with one eye open, the corner of the kitchen where their first laugh might happen.

And because this story is so personal, it makes sense that what you wear should feel personal too.

This isn’t about showing up in the perfect outfit. It’s about showing up as you—just a little more curated.

Let’s talk through what works, what photographs well, and how to bring your story into the frame.

Start With the Story

Before we even get to fabrics and tones, ask yourself: What kind of feeling do I want these photos to hold?

Are you imagining something soft and romantic? Casual and honest? Minimal and modern? Cultural, spiritual, sentimental?

There’s no wrong answer. But knowing the vibe helps guide what you wear—and how we photograph you.

If you’re not sure, that’s fine too. That’s what we’re here for. We often say, “Show me what you’ve got,” and go from there. A little planning goes a long way, but some of the best sessions come from working with what’s already in your wardrobe.

Tell the whole story in every session with Grain & Weave.

Outfit Ideas That Work Beautifully

A Light Look and a Dark Look

Having two options—one light, one dark—can completely change the tone of your gallery. Think of it like mood-setting. Light = airy, timeless, soft. Dark = rich, grounded, emotive.

Both are beautiful. Both have a place.

Solid Colours (and Why They Work)

We recommend solid tones over heavy prints because they keep the focus on you—and that beautiful bump. Earthy tones, pastels, or deep muted shades all work well in home light.

Prints can work too, but keep them minimal or textured (like lace or subtle floral) if possible.

Fabrics With Flow

Silk, satin, linen, lace, cotton—all these give lovely movement and softness. Materials that catch the light or drape well help create those dreamy, natural shapes we love to photograph.

Knitted dresses, oversized wool jumpers, ribbed sets—they all work beautifully too. A snug fit can show off your shape, especially if you’re after something a little more defined.

Don’t Forget the Details

Button-Up Shirts

A classic for a reason. Borrow one from your partner if it feels like you. Looks beautiful open over underwear, or half-buttoned with bump peeking through.

Matching Underwear

If you’re comfortable with a little skin showing (no pressure if not!), a simple matching set in a neutral colour can work really well for soft, intimate frames.

You don’t need to buy anything new—what you already have is almost always perfect. And if you’re unsure, just lay a few options out. We’ll take a look and help you choose.

Bring in Meaning

Maternity sessions aren’t just about the bump—they’re about the life you’re building.

We love when families bring personal touches to their session:

  • Ultrasound scans

  • Knitted blankets or booties

  • Cultural clothing or shawls

  • A soft toy passed down from older siblings or grandparents

  • A journal, book, or even a room being set up for baby

It’s not about copying a Pinterest board—it’s about telling your story. But if you’re looking for inspiration, we always suggest browsing what we’ve done for other families. Not to replicate it, but to spark ideas for what might resonate with you.

Be Prepared (But Not Stressed)

We know this isn’t your usual Tuesday. The best advice? Have a few options ready. Keep things comfortable. Choose things you can move in, sit in, stretch in, cuddle in.

And don’t forget the little things:

  • A brush, lip balm, or simple moisturiser

  • Keep jewellery minimal unless it has meaning

  • Think about nails if your hands will be on bump a lot (they will be!)

  • Make sure the room is comfortably warm, especially if you're wearing lighter fabrics

Grooming matters, too—whether that’s a fresh shave, brushed hair, or simply making sure everyone feels fresh and put-together in a way that suits them. Partners matter in the photos just as much. This is your first shared moment as a family, after all.

Most Important of All: Feel Like You

This isn’t about fitting into a mould.

Every family is different. Every shape, every story, every room. That’s what makes this work so meaningful.

So wear what makes you feel confident. What makes you feel beautiful. What reminds you that yes, this is happening—you’re building a home for someone new.

If you're still unsure, just reach out. We're more than happy to talk it through, help you plan, or make last-minute changes on the day.

Because this isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.
